This solution offers the fastest Server recovery in the event of a total failure of server hardware or loss through fire, flood or theft.
Most people who operate a tape backup system imagine that system recovery will be a relatively quick and painless process. Unfortunately this is very rarely the reality. For example, in typical small/medium sized businesses that outsource their IT support, the recovery process is usually as follows:
1) Customer reports a problem with the Server to Support Company.
2) Support Company arrives onsite to determine the extent of the problem.
3) Once it has been determined that the hardware problem is serious enough to warrant complete replacement, then a suitable specification server must be
ordered.
4) Given that Server manufacturers update their main product lines every year to18 months, it is likely that the replacement hardware is significantly changed to the original. The problem with this is that it is almost impossible to get a Windows based server restored ‘as was’ on disparate hardware from a tape restore.
5) To overcome this, a basic operating system must then be installed with
appropriate drivers for the hardware and a tape restore must then be started. It will be possible to get files back relatively quickly, however shared folders etc will need to be recreated along with appropriate file access rights. If you have Microsoft Exchange™ for email then restoring onto a “new” fileserver is again very difficult and time consuming. It is a similar situation if you have a database running on Microsoft SQL Server™.
In summary, it could take many days or in some cases, weeks to get a working system fully operational.
